Abstract

625,558. Control systems for space-discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WILLOUGHBY, A. H. Aug. 11, 1947, No. 22255. [Class 38 (iv)] An electromagnetic switch 6 shunted across a discharge lamp, such as a high-pressure mercury vapour lamp 1, supplied from D.C. through an inductance 4 to provide the starting voltage, is rendered inoperative or ineffective, whilst the lamp is operating by associating either the operating coil 7 or the switch 6 itself with contacts 9 of a relay 8 actuated by the lamp operating current. The contacts preferably open the circuit of the coil 7, as shown, or they may open the circuit of switch 6. Alternatively they may short-circuit the coil in which case a resistance is required in series with the coil.
