Abstract
630,478. Control systems for space discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and BOWTELL, J. N. Dec. 3, 1947, No. 31934. [Class 38 (iv)] To effect simultaneous flashing of a plurality of discharge lamps 1, 1<1>, heating current is supplied continuously to the lamp cathodes 7, 8, 71, 81 from a transformer 4, and a choke 9, 91 is included in each of the circuits supplying the discharge current to the parallel connected lamps, across each of which is connected the normally open contacts 10, 10<1> of an electromagnetic switch, the coils 11, 11<1> of which are connected to a D.C. source 12 through a contacting device 13 to effect simultaneous actuation of the switches. When the contacts 13 are opened, the switches 10, 10<1> remove the short-circuit from lamps and interrupt the choke currents thereby providing a voltage pulse across each lamp simultaneously to start the discharges. The contacts 10, 10<1> are preferably enclosed in an evacuated envelope and the contacting device may comprise a motordriven cam 14 adapted to operate the contacts 13 at desired intervals. Lamps having an earth wire outside the envelope may be used to assist and ensure simultaneity of starting.
