Abstract

836,611. Discharge lamp circuits. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 17, 1958 [Nov. 1, 1957], No. 34171/57. Class 38 (4).. A starting circuit for operating two or more discharge lamps 1 from a D.C. supply comprises a relay 5, 8, 10 whose contacts 5 close the lamp heater circuit through a ballast resistor 4 and whose contacts 8 shunt a capacitor 13 in series with an air-gapped inductor 7 and a lamp 6, the opening of contacts 8 causing a high-voltage pulse to be applied to the lamp starting conductors 9. A reversing switch 12 connects the circuit to the supply and a further switch 11 controls the coil 10 of the relay which may be normally operated or normally released. Ballast resistor 4 may comprise a tungsten filament lamp. The starting conductors 9 consist of four lengths of stranded insulated wire spaced about # inch apart and ¢ inch away from the lamp. Constructional details of the inductor are described in the Specification.
