Abstract

612,787. Supply systems for space discharge apparatus. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. June 4, 1946, No. 16939. Convention date, April 6, 1940. [Class 38 (iv)] The heating circuit of a discharge tube 1 includes, besides the normal ballast impedance 9 a double-wound choke 8, 13 with one winding on each side of a filament 2 and wound so that as far as the electrode heating circuit through the condenser 14 is concerned its impedance is a minimum. When, however, the electrodes are sufficiently heated and the tube starts, the winding 13 being shunted by the discharge carries less current than winding 8 and the choke has an effective impedance. A thinner gauge wire may be used for winding 8 than for winding 13 and the winding 8 may consist of a few strands of a stranded conductor, the major number of which serve for the winding 13. The condenser 14 and ballast 9 may be interchanged. A second double-wound choke may be associated with the other terminals of the tube. The invention is applicable to any tube comprising conducting bridges between terminals 4, 5 and 6, 7, whereby the circuit becomes interrupted when the tube is not in its holder; these bridges may be auxiliary discharge paths.
