Abstract

1,026,069. Discharge lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Dec. 31, 1964 [Dec. 31, 1963], No. 53057/64. Heading H1D. An arc discharge lamp, particularly a fluorescent lamp, having an electrode filament supported by leads 3, 4 extending through stem 2, has a conductor 13 extending from an internal part 3b of one of the leads to a thinwalled portion 2a of the stem adjacent an external part 3a of the lead, so that if the electrode filament burns out, the arc is directed by conductor 13 through wall portion 2a to external lead 3a, and is extinguished by perforation of the wall. This arrangement prevents overheating of internal parts of the electrode support which might break the side walls 1 of the envelope, and prevents a weak flickering discharge which might damage the current-limiting ballast in the lamp fitting. The nickel-plated iron wire conductor 13 shown may be replaced by a conductive coating on the stem comprising colloidal graphite or nickel powder in a potassium silicate binder. The electrode filament may be associated with an auxiliary electrode, Fig. 1 (not shown), and is mounted in front of a shielding disc 11. A base 7 with terminals 5 is cemented to each end of the lamp.
