Abstract

566,300. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 16, 1943, No. 6140. Convention date, April 21, 1942. [Class 39 (i)] In a cold starting positive column discharge device having an envelope 15 containing an ionizable atmosphere, the electrode which functions as a cathode comprises a member 21 so fine as to be heated to effective emission by the discharge and a disc 22 electrically connected to member 21, mounted in front thereof and obstructing at least 50 per cent of the crosssection of the envelope where it is located. This disc 22 avoids any substantial sputtering from member 21 in starting and, if the disc is situated within the volume normally occupied by the Faraday dark space, this space is reduced in dimensions. The illuminating power of the device is thus increased. The disc 22 may be divided into two halves, each connected to an opposite end of member 21. This ensures that member 21 is heated during starting by current passing therethrough to a portion of disc 22, whereas there is also a portion of disc 22 in direct contact with the mains to function as an anode when the current alternates. Member 21 may be of 2.55 mil. tungsten wire and disc 22 may be of nickel 20 mils. thick. Both may be activated by refractory oxides. Specification 542,853 is referred to.
