Abstract

1,176,333. Discharge lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 12 Dec., 1966 [23 Dec., 1965], No. 55594/66. Heading H1D. A cathode for high pressure electrical discharge devices comprises a sintered tungsten form 14 having a tip 15, a cavity remote from the tip and a refractory metal wire spring 19 retaining emissive material 20 therein. The cavity may be a generally rectangular slot or of circular or elliptical cross-section and the spring is preferably of circular cross-section or may be rectangular or oval cross-section for example. A helical spring is described. More than one cavity and spring may be included in a single cathode. The sintered body 14 is preferably pressure formed around the drawn tungsten wire support rod 16. Arc tube 2 may be of high melting point vitreous material such as quartz.
