Abstract

1,270,709. Metal-vapour lamps. SONY CORP. 27 June, 1969 [29 June, 1968], No. 32623/69. Heading H1D. A mercury lamp having a tubular quartz envelope of inner diameter in the range 0À5 to 1À4 mm., an electrode 12A, 12B sealed in, and mercury 15 retained at, each end of the envelope, and a rare gas included in its filling, further has a spherical cavity 14A, 14B formed in the envelope in the vicinity of the inner end of each electrode, whereby to give a fine line source of light, while delaying the onset of devitrification. The electrodes may be of tungsten wire, tapered at their inner ends as shown to have diameters at their base and inner ends of 0À5 mm. and 0À3 mm. respectively. The diameter of the cavities may be 2 to 2À5 mm. The lamp may be used in the manufacture of colour television phosphor screens.
