Abstract

1,178,091. Discharge lamps. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 3 April, 1968 [23 May, 1967], No. 16002/68. Heading H1D. A discharge device, e.g. a lamp, comprises an elongated light-transmitting ceramic envelope 12 sealed at each end by closure members 14 which extend at least partly into the envelope and which have an interior surface in the general shape of a cone or cup with its largest diameter nearest the middle of the device, and discharge-sustaining electrodes 26 mounted within the envelope so as to have at least a portion lying within the cup- or coneshaped surface. The closure members may be a cylindrical ceramic plug 18 having a conical inner bore which may be covered by a thin walled refractory metal cone, e.g. of tantalum or niobium as shown. Alternatively the closure members may be refractory metal cones extending partially into the envelope with the space between the cone and the envelope filled with a refractory composition, e.g. aluminium oxide or quartz fibres. A sealing composition may be used as at 22 consisting of CaO and Al 2 O 3 in eutectic proportions.
