Abstract

1,025,723. Electric discharge tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 26, 1964 [May 1, 1963], No. 17184/63. Heading H1D. In an electrical device having an hermetically sealed envelope, e.g. an incandescent lamp containing iodine and rare gas, or a metal vapour discharge lamp, at least the greater part of the wall of the envelope is provided by a single crystal of one or more refractory oxides. In particular, a synthetic alumina (corundum or sapphire) crystal may be ground to the shape of a rod and bored to form a tube having a length of 60 mm., an internal diameter of 6 mm. and a wall thickness of 0À8 mm. This tube may form a discharge lamp envelope, its ends being closed by electrode-supporting niobium caps sealed thereto by calcium aluminate. The discharge lamp may have a filling of sodium and argon at 20 mm. of Hg pressure, and may be mounted in a cylindrical glass outer jacket.
