Abstract

1,039,649. Metal vapour lamps. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. April 13, 1965 [May 19, 1964], No. 15711/65. Heading H1D. The arc tube 12, Fig. 1 (not shown), of a double envelope high-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp has at each end a metal cap 32 with a packing of refractory fibrous material forming a heat trap to inhibit condensation at the ends of the tube of an additive to the filling. The filling may comprise mercury, argon at a pressure of 20-25 mm. Hg, and an additive of the iodide of thallium, sodium or iridium, or other metallic iodides, chlorides or bromides. A small amount of thallium metal may also be present. The caps 32 which may be of nickelplated steel comprise a strip 38, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), and trapezoidal portions 40 which are bent to conform to the shape of the arc tube end, and are secured to transverse supporting straps 34. The packing material may be aluminium silicate fibre or quartz wool. The arc tube 12 may be of quartz or polycrystalline alumina. The lamp is otherwise similar in construction to the lamp described in Specification 701,033, and comprises a starter electrode 26 connected through a resistor 28 to one of the leads 24.
