Abstract

1,071,103. Metal vapour lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Nov. 19, 1964 [Nov. 22, 1963], No. 47193/64. Heading H1D. A high pressure discharge lamp includes an arc tube, containing a filling of mercury, a halide, and at least one further arc-forming metal, mounted by a harness within an outer bulbous envelope, the harness also supporting a pair of plates between which is disposed a glass sleeve surrounding the arc tube, and forming with the plates a heat-entrapping chamber about the tube. The quartz or alumina arc tube (12, Fig. I, not shown), containing mercury at several atmospheres pressure, argon at 25 torr, a colour modifying metal, and a halide, is supported within the outer envelope (2) by a harness borne by a lead-in wire (6) and frictionally engaging envelope (2) with leaf springs (60). The harness carries plates (61) and (62), which are apertured to receive the press seals of the arc tube, the plates also having inwardly directed tabs (66) which project into, and resiliently support, the enclosing quartz sleeve (55). The starting electrode (18), which may alternatively be mounted through a side wall to reduce electrolytic action, is connected in series with a resistor (26), and may be connected with the adjacent main electrode through a circuit-breaker, such that it is shorted out once an arc is formed. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the lamp electrodes are provided with heater coils.
