Abstract

1,128,504. Thermionic cathodes for discharge lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 29 Dec., 1965 [29 Dec., 1964], No. 55116/65. Heading H1D. In a high pressure Hg vapour discharge tube incorporating iodine and one or more of the light emitting metals selected from Th, Sc, V, Y, La, Lu, Ho, Tm, Ce, Nd, Pr, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Er, at least part of the light emitting metal is in the form of a core 17 within a tubular W electrode 16. During manufacture a thick shell of W may be vapour-deposited about the metal core, or a hole drilled in a W rod may be filled with the metal core. The W tube may be surrounded by a Mo or W helix 11 and the electrode lead-in wire 3 may be fixed to a Mo foil sealed in the steam - press, Fig. 1 (not shown). The lamp may contain 50 mg. of Hg, 7À5 mg. HgI 2 , 1À0 mg. TLI and 19À5 mg. NaI at 23 mm. of Hg pressure, the electrodes having a Th core. The initial operating voltage may be 109À2v. rising during the life of the tube to about 126v. The lamp envelope may be of quartz, alumina or silica glass.
