Abstract
1,215,480. Discharge lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 29 Dec., 1967 [29 Dec., 1966], No. 59214/67. Heading H1D. A high pressure lamp comprising an arc tube 2 arranged within an outer envelope 1 filled with nitrogen, is provided with a barium peroxide getter 34 for absorbing any hydrogen evolved in the outer envelope. Hydrogen is especially deleterious when the arc tube contains mercury and a halogen and may be removed by a getter in the form of a wafer (40, Fig. 2, not shown) of pressed barium peroxide pellets which have been fired in oxygen to sinter them together. This is preferably disposed within two pairs of foraminous plates to protect it from ultra-violet light which decomposes the peroxide, and the completed getter should be disposed in a zone where the temperature is between 150‹ and 427‹ C. The lamp shown includes an arc tube 2 supported at the lower end from a lead in wire 12 by a frame 8 and the upper end by a support 10, both supports being provided with resilient bumpers 26 and 9 which extend to the envelope and prevent leakage if the tube is dropped. The starting electrode 5 is connected in series with a resistance 13 and is connected by a bimetal 22 to the electrode 4 when the lamp is running.
