Abstract
1,149,022. Metal vapour lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 31 March, 1966 [19 April, 1965], No. 14292/66. Heading H1D In a high-pressure discharge lamp, an arc tube having a filling of mercury, halogen and sodium atoms is mounted in an outer envelope through one end of which leads for the arc tube enter, by independent supports at its two ends, the support at the end remote from that at which the leads enter engaging the jacket wall to centre the arc tube, and the current lead to the electrode at the remote end of the arc tube being arranged remote from the latter, to minimize the passage of sodium ions through the wall of the arc tube during operation of the lamp. The arc tube 2 is supported at its near end by a strap 7 clamped around its press seal, and at the remote end is centred by resilient members 9 which engage the inner surface of the outer envelope, and are themselves attached to a frame 10 secured to the arc tube by a strap 11 clamped around its press seal. The thin lead 20 to the electrode 3 at the remote end of the arc tube lies closely adjacent the outer envelope; at the other end a starting probe 5 with a resistor 13 in series is short circuited to the adjacent electrode 4 by a bimetal switch 22 when the lamp has started, to minimize electrolysis therebetween.
