Abstract
1,089,635. Discharge-lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Dec. 31, 1964 [Dec. 31, 1963], No. 53056/64. Heading H1D. An arc discharge lamp containing a vaporizable positively ionizable material comprises a starting resistance R2, having an ohmic value which is a substantial fraction (at least one-third) of the stable operating resistance of the arc, connected in series with one of the electrodes 16, and a thermostatic switch 21-23 responsive to heat from the arc discharge to short-circuit the resistance. In particular, for a lamp having an arc impedance of 40 ohms at its operating temperature of 600‹ to 700‹ C., the resistance R2 may be 20 ohms, and the bimetallic switch element 23 may be set so that contacts 21, 22 close when the arc tube is partially warmed up and the arc impedance is 20 to 30 ohms. The invention has particular utility in lamps having gas fillings comprising Hg, A, a halide (e.g. Cl, Br, I), an alkali metal (e.g. Na or Cs), and a spectral continuum-forming metal (e.g. In, Ga, Tl, Th or a rare earth metal). The resistor R2 may be replaced by a tungsten filament extending through arc tube supporting collar 12 along the side of the arc tube adjacent electrode 16 to supply heat during starting, Fig. 2 (not shown). As shown, the arc tube comprises a starting electrode 17 connected through resistor R1 to frame 4 and terminal wire 7.
