Abstract

1,080,606. Discharge lamps. PEK LABS Inc. Nov. 10, 1965 [March 15, 1965], No. 47654/65. Heading H1D. In an arc lamp similar to that described in Specification 1,042,213, and comprising a conductive bridgewire 70 disposed axially across the arc gap and conductively coupled to the anode 50 and cathode 54 of the lamp, the bridgewire being such that it fuses upon application of normal low-voltage operating power between the anode and cathode so that the lamp may be used for single start operation without the need for a high voltage starting power supply, the bridgewire is of uniform cross-sectional area. The fusible bridgewire may be of Fe, Cu, W, Mo, Pt or Ta and may comprise a single strand secured in slots disposed on opposite sides of the anode and cathode, Fig. 2 (not shown), or two strands twisted together as shown. In the latter case the electrode spacing may be adjusted by twisting the electrodes in opposite directions until the wire is properly tensioned. The ends of the wire may be welded to the anode or secured thereto by means of Pt tabs. Specific dimensions of the bridgewire are given. The lamp may contain hydrogen or xenon at 3 to 15 atmospheres at room temperature.
