Abstract
1,138,913. Metal vapour lamps. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 22 Feb., 1967 [5 Dec., 1966], No. 8363/67. Heading H1D. The filling of a mercury vapour lamp includes dysprosium, thallium, iodine, and an inert starting gas, the relative amounts preferably being such that the dysprosium and thallium are present substantially as the iodide, and the mercury is fully vaporized during operation. The amount of the filling constituents per cm. of arc length are given, and 20 to 25 torr of argon may be employed as starting gas. The high pressure lamp has a double envelope, is provided with a starting circuit which includes bi-metal switches and a resistor for initially heating one of the lamp electrodes, and has the ends of the envelope behind the electrodes coated with a heat-reflecting coating of zirconium oxide and silicon dioxide, whereby a minimum temperature in the tube of at least 750‹ C. may be maintained.
