Abstract

1,067,923. Metal-vapour lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Oct. 20, 1965 [Oct. 20, 1964], No. 44486/65. Heading H1D. A high pressure discharge lamp has a filling which includes mercury, vanadium, and bromine, chlorine, or iodine, the atomic ratio of halogen to mercury lying between 0À025 and 0À65, and the vanadium concentration lying in the range 5À2 x 10<SP>-7</SP> to 1À6 x 10<SP>-5</SP> gm. atoms per cm. of arc length; alternatively, up to 50% of the vanadium may be replaced by scandium or thorium on an atom-for-atom basis. The mercury is completely evaporated and may be at half to several atmospheres pressure when operating. The filling may also include 5À25 x 10<SP>-7</SP> to 1À6 x 10<SP>-5</SP> gm. atoms per cm. of arc length of lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, or caesium to improve the colour, 25 torr of helium, neon, argon, krypton or xenon to aid starting, and thallium. The alumina arc tube is mounted within an outer jacket (3, Fig. 2, not shown), and is provided with a starting electrode (18), a resistor (26), and a heat shield (61).
