Abstract
1282805 Metal vapour lamps PATENTTBEUHAND-GES FUR ELEKTRISCHE GLUHLAMPEN mbH 30 July 1970 [8 Aug 1969] 36983/70 Heading HID A high pressure mercury vapour lamp includes in its filling a halide of a rare-earth metal, the ratio by weight of halogen to the rare-earth metal being between 2 and 10 and the lamp operating with a wall loading of 10-100 W./cm.<SP>2</SP> and an arc output of 100-1000 W./cm. The filling may comprise a rare gas and a starting gas, 0-25-11 mg./cm.<SP>3</SP> of the iodide of thulium or holmium, 0-0.2 mg./cm<SP>3</SP> of thallium iodide, and 2-10 mg./cm<SP>3</SP> of mercury, there being preferably up to 50% excess of the quantity of iodine equivalent to the rare earths. In one example the lamp envelope is coated internally with a protective coating of boron oxide and is provided with a reflective coating at each end. The volume of the envelope is 2-3 cm.<SP>3</SP> and the electrode spacing 12 mm. ; the filling comprises argon at 50 Torr, l'5mg. thulium, 4 mg. mercury and 7 mg. of mercury iodide which reacts in the discharge vessel with the thulium to form thulium iodide. With 500 W. input the efficiency is 90lm./W.; for 600 W. and 5 kW. lamps the efficiency is 110 and 130lm./W. respectively.
