Abstract

1,168,460. Metal vapor lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. 20 Dec. 1966 [29 Dec., 1965], No. 57032/66. Heading H1D. A high pressure electric discharge device has a filling including Hg, a halogen other than fluorine, e.g. I and an alkali metal, particularly Na, contained in a quartz arc tube having on its surface a coating 1 such as zirconium oxide or zirconium oxide with not more than 15% by wt. of yttrium oxide which prevents migration of alkali atoms into the quartz. A further coating 2 of a refractory oxide, e.g. of calcium, magnesium or aluminium oxide, or an equal parts by wt. mix - ture of aluminaandmagnesia prevents migration of Zr atoms into the discharge space. Layers 1 and 2 may be 400 to 1000 Š and 1200 to 3000 Š thick respectively. Reference is made to one half to several atmospheres Hg pressure at 450 to 700‹ C. operating temperature, 2.5 x 10<SP>-5</SP> to 4À1 x 10<SP>-5</SP>grm. atoms of Hg/cm. of arc length, the inclusion of He, Ar, Ne, Kr or Xe at a pressure of 25 mms. Hg and the inclusion of Cd, Ga, In, Mo, Sc, Tl, Th and V. Electrodes 13 and 14 may be of W or Mo containing Th within the helices, or may be of thoriated W wire (containing 2 to 4% Th by wt.) or the Th may be eliminated entirely. Starting electrode 18 may be of Ta or W.
