Abstract
A composite glass tube, which can form the envelope-preferably U-shaped-of a sodium vapour discharge lamp, consists of an outer layer of support glass, an intermediate layer of non-darkening sodium resistant glass, and an inner layer of darkening sodium resistant glass, the outer layer being thicker than the combined thickness of the intermediate and inner layers, preferably ten or more times as thick. Preferably, the intermediate layer is thicker than the inner layer, e.g. two or three times as thick. In a specific example the outside diameter of the glass tube was 17 mms. and the average wall thickness was 1.0 mm., the intermediate layer being 0.029 mm. thick and the inner layer being 0.013 mm. thick. The support glass consists of, in weight percentages, SiO2-72.0, Al2O3-1.5, CaO-5.2, MgO-3.1, Na2O-17.5, K2O-0.2, B2O3-0.5. The intermediate layer consists of SiO2-0.6, B2O3-22.1, Al2O3-24.4, CaO-7.0, BaO-44.8, SrO-0.2, Na2O-0.2, K2O-1.4. The inner layer consists of SiO2-8.2, Al2O3-26.5, CaO-7.2, Na2O-12.9, B2O3-45.2. The thermal expansions of the glasses are closely matched. The composite tubing is made by the usual process of blowing and drawing by hand.
