Abstract

In the manufacture of electrical apparatus comprising a cylindrical porcelain bushing connected to a closely-surrounding metal collar by a ring of glass which fuses during firing to form a vacuum-tight seal, a porcelain is employed which has no abrupt variation in its rate of expansion between room temperature and 1100 DEG C. and which is formed from a mixture containing substantially 1.58 per cent Na2O, 3.35 per cent K2O, 0.09 per cent CaO, 0.12 per cent MgO, 0.71 per cent TiO2, 0.47 per cent Fe2O3, 24.80 per cent Al2O3, 10-41 per cent zircon, cordierite, fused silica, or mulliteforming materials, and the remainder silica. The mixture is fired at approximately 1225 DEG C. Preferably, all the free silica is replaced as by zircon, a satisfactory final mixture including 12.57 per cent ZrO2 and 56.31 per cent SiO2. The coefficient of expansion is close to that of the nickel-cobalt-iron alloy of which the collar is made and to a borosilicate glass employed for the seal.
