Abstract

An electric discharge tube producing a high temperature in the region of its contactmaking cap has the cap formed of a dispersion of glass in porous, heat-proof, insulating material such as asbestos-cement, gypsum or brick chamotte. The percentage of glass may be 20-55. Asbestos powder, Portland cement, talc and borate glass may be mixed together in the proportions 30, 80, 70 and 15 and the mixture moistened, cold-moulded to form the cap, dried and sintered at 1000 DEG C. To avoid the risk of moisture being taken up by the cap at its cool part near the electric contacts, the cap so formed is soaked in an alcoholic solution or aqueous dispersion of phenolformaldehyde condensation product and slowly heated to 180 DEG C. and cooled. The borate glass contains SiO2, B2O3, Al2O3, Na2O and CaO in the proportions 9, 50, 15, 16 and 10 and may be replaced by other low melting-point glass.
