Abstract

Teeth or jacket crowns having a metal core with a ceramic coating have the coating formed in at least two layers, the metal base being covered with a thin opaque base layer, which is subsequently further covered with a translucent glaze. Both layers comprise oxides of silicon, aluminium, iron, titanian, calcium, potassium and sodium and, in addition, the opaque layer includes zirconium, tin and boron oxides. Both layers also include small proportions of fluorine and, if desired, the transparent layer may itself be made in two layers, the inner one being pigmented. Preferably the glaze layer is thicker than the opaque layer in order to give the desired optical effects and both enamel layers are arranged to have coefficients of expansion slightly less than that of the metal base.
