Abstract

In an ampoule adapted to be hermetically sealed, and formed with a transversely preweakened constricted neck, the ratio of the wall thickness of the neck to the outer diameter at the preweakening is not less than 8 per cent for an outer diameter of 10 mms. or more, and not less than 10 per cent for an outer diameter of 4 mms., with a commensurate intermediate ratio for an intermediate diameter, and the preweakening is sufficient to enable the neck to be intentionally broken by finger pressure after cleaning, filling, sealing and transport. The thickness of the constricted neck portion may be greater than elsewhere. Preweakening is in the form of a notch or scratch in an arc or ring extending around the neck, the position of which may be indicated by coloured fusible material applied before annealing. Preweakening may also be effected by the application of a cold tool to the neck when hot or by the application of fusible material of coefficient of expansion different from that of the material of the ampoule. Specification 674,562 is referred to.
