Abstract
A discharge tube envelope formed of a translucent mass of polycrystalline sintered alumina has at least one surface provided with a light-transmissive fused layer of a refractory oxide effectively sealing the surface against the passage of gas or vapour therethrough. The layer may be formed by heating the alumina surface to its melting-point of about 2050 DEG C. with high-intensity hydrogen/oxygen flames, or by applying to the surface a flux such as magnesium oxide or calcium oxide capable of forming by itself, or in combination with the alumina, a fused layer on heating to an appropriate temperature.ALSO:The inner and/or outer surface of a discharge tube of translucent polycrystalline sintered alumina is flame polished and converted to monocrystalline form by means of a high intensity hydrogen-oxygen flame, optionally with the aid of a flux.
