Abstract

Ceramic ware of which silicon or silicon alloy is an essential constituent is fired at a temperature above 1250 DEG C. and below the softening temperature of the ware or the fusing point of silicon, precautions being taken to prevent oxygen acting on the silicon. The firing may be effected in an atmosphere containing little or no free oxygen, or may be rapid to produce vitrification quickly. Saggers containing carbon may be used to protect the ware from oxygen. If liquid or gaseous fuel is used the proportion of air is regulated so that the firing atmosphere contains no free oxygen.
