Abstract

The lining for a crucible of an induction furnace is prepared by ramming dry lime between a core and the furnace coil, and bringing it to a temperature of approximately 2000 DEG C. This may be effected by heating a graphite core, which need have no direct contact with the crucible, until a thoroughly sintered layer of about 5-20 mm. thickness has been formed on the lining. A neutral gas such as nitrogen or argon may be introduced between the graphite core and the crucible wall. A temperature range of 1800-2000 DEG C., with a calcining time of 1/2 -2 hours, have proved to be sufficient. The resultant lining is said to be resistant to pressure and to the action of water vapour or CO2.
