Abstract

1312150 Linings for metallurgical furnaces and vessels DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 14 Aug 1970 39340/70 Heading F4B A vacuum treating and/or induction heated metallurigcal furnace or vessel such as a mixer or a ladle, has a lining comprising an inner layer 9 c f fused lime, fused dolomite, or fused magnesia bracks, and a tamped layer 13 of granular fused magnesia or stabilized zirconium oxide. A tamped layer 11 of quartzite, corundum, mullite or spinel may also be provided within a steel jacket 1 internally lined with glass fibres, asbestos or a quartz containing mixture. A fireclay foundation 5, tamped floor 4, 6 of dry fused magnesia and headstone 10 are also provided the latter being tamped in place with help of a damp mixture of fused magnesia and waterglass. The bricks of layer 9, which may have dry fused magnesia sprinkled between them are at least 40 mm. thick. The lower brick rings of layer 9 which contact molten metal within the furnace or vessel are preferably of fused lime or fused dolomite, and the upper brick rings which contact slag are preferably of fused dolomite or fused magnesia respectively. A preferred particle size distribution, for a tamped layer 13 comprising at least 90% magnesia, is disclosed.
