Abstract

1,210,196. Furnace linings. HOESCH A.G. 19 Feb., 1969 [28 Feb., 1968], No. 9067/69. Heading F4B. A method of protecting the refractory linings of metallurgical furnaces and vessels based on magnesite or alumina, against attack by molten steel and slag, comprises applying to the lining a protective coating of either alumina in the case of a magnesite lining or of magnesia in the case of an alumina lining, wherein by a surface reaction between the lining and the corresponding oxide there is formed a protective layer consisting essentially of spinel. The spinel forming reaction on the surface of a magnesite lining is obtained by adding between 0À3 and 3 kg. per square metre of lining surface of alumina with the melt.
