Abstract
A cast-iron or steel ingot mould is given a refractory insulating lining to retard the initial solidification of the metal (see Division B3). Refractories mentioned are; asbestos, diatomaceous earth, perlite, vermiculite and alumina bubbles. As bonding materials: bentonite, cereal binder, china clay, core oil, corn flour, dextrin, ethyl (or methyl) cellulose, fire clay, gum arabic, ground resin, molasses, phenolic resin, urea formaldehyde, water glass and pitch are mentioned. Other ingredients mentioned are: aluminium hydroxide, alumina, glutrin, ball clay, chamotte, chrome ore, dolomite, flint clay, forsterite, glass wool, graphite, kaolin, limestone, mineral wool, blast-furnace slag, open-hearth slag, magnesia, magnesite, rutile, silicates, silica, silicon carbide or zircon. The mixture, in a vehicle such as water, alcohol kerosene or ketone, is applied to the mould interior by brushing, spraying, dipping or swabbing to give a coating at least 0.02 to 0.25 inches thick according to the teeming period. A lining is applied for each casting.
