Abstract

A refractory substance for use in repairing or lining furnaces or casting moulds comprises a solid granular or powdered material which, on heating, yields water to effect self-tempering and setting of the composition. The material is preferably an alkaline silicate containing water of crystallization, e.g., sodium metasilicate which contains up to nine molecules of water. The material is powdered and mixed with any refractory material, e.g., silica, alumina, clay, lime, chamotte, china clay, terracotta, quartz, magnesia, graphite, carborundum, zircon, or chromite, and the mixture is applied to the hot surface of the furnace or mould without previous tempering with water, whereby the water of crystallization is released and, after permeating the mass, is dried off leaving a hard refractory mass. When used as a lining for ingot moulds, the walls of the latter may be formed with depressions to keep the lining in place and metal reinforcements may be provided.
