Abstract

1454201 Refractories M MIKI 9 May 1974 20522/74 Heading C1J [Also in Division F4] A ladle is lined with a composition 1 comprising: (a) 40-80% by weight of at least one powdered or granular refractory selected from high alumina refractory, silica refractory, chamotte refractory, agalmatalite, magnesia refractory, dolomite refractory and chromium refractory (b) 10-30% by weight of at least one metal or alloy selected from aluminium, ferro-silicon, and calcium silicon (c) 3-20% by weight of an oxidizing agent, e.g. sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate, manganese dioxide, chromium oxide or scale from the hot rolling of iron or steel, (d) 5-10% by weight of an inorganic or organic binding agent, e.g. sodium silicate or phenolic resin, and at least one further member selected from (e) not more than 10% by weight of asbestos and/or slag wool, (f) not more than 10% by weight of paper and/or paper pulp and (g) not more than 10% by weight of calcined vermiculite and/or calcined pearlite. The composition may be applied direct to the ladle 3 or indirectly on top of an intermediate refractory lining 4. After application the surface of the composition is heated to oxidize the metals or alloys thereby sintering the lining composition due to the high temperature generated by the oxidation. The composition may be preformed into sleeve-shaped and disc shaped structures (Fig. 1) which may then be placed directly in the shell 3 or used in conjunction with the intermediate lining 4.
