Abstract
1,180,625. Mould-lining and hot-top materials; continuous casting. H. J. DAUSSAN. 23 June, 1967 [30 June, 1966], No. 29117/67. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C3] A facing for moulds, such as ingot, continuous casting or other foundry moulds, comprises a granular refractory component, a fibrous component and a binder, wherein components referred to as refractory remain solid at least up to a temperature of 800‹ C., the composition (see Division C3) comprising a porous granular refractory component, a non-porous granular refractory component, a fibrous refractory component, a binder, up to 40% of an exothermic component consisting of an oxidizing agent, a reducing agent and a flux and wherein the content of organic matter is 12% maximum, said composition excluding any fibrous organic component. The facing may be composite, comprising an insulating part in contact with the mould and an exothermic part in contact with the metal. The composite facing may be made by fixing separately prepared facings together, e.g. by bonding with binders, mechanical means, e.g. metal clips or by a tight fit without clearance or the materials may be introduced into the mould in a given order either in the aqueous phase or in a dry or slightly moist condition. The porous granular refractory component may be expanded perlite, spherulitic alumina fossil silica or metallurgical coke. The non- porous granular refractory component may be silica, magnesia, chamotte, slag or crude or roasted dolomite. The fibrous refractory component may be asbestos fibres or glass fibres. The binder may be sodium silicate, potassium silicate, aluminium phosphate, clay, bentonite, formo-phenolic resin, amylaceous binder, dextrinated binder, urea-formaldehyde resin, furanic resin, terpenic resin, polyvinyl acetate or epoxy-resin. Suitable reducing agents are: Al, Si, FeSiMg, FeSiAl, SiCa, C; suitable oxidizing agents: alkaline nitrates, manganese dioxide, iron oxide, magnesia; suitable fluxes: cryolite, fluorspar.
