Abstract

An exothermic composition particularly for use in the casting of metals consists of a metal-preferably an alkali metal-chlorate or perchlorate, aluminium, colloidal clay e.g. Fontenay sand, bentonite or china clay, and at least one oxidizing agent. The chlorate or perchlorate and the colloidal clay, preferably form 8.-20 per cent by weight of the composition and the ratio of clay to chlorate or perchlorate is preferably between 1/10 and 5/6 . satisfactory compositions comprise: Aluminium (divided particles) 5-20 per cent: Manganese dioxide or other metal oxides or mixtures thereof, 10-30 per cent: Clay-bearing sand (Fontenay containing 15 per cent clay) 5-40 per cent: Alkali metal chlorate or perchlorate 3-15 per cent: Binder, such as dextrin or coregum 2-7 per cent: Granulated alumina or silica sand or other refractory material), remainder. The mixture may be made into a prefabricated shape for incorporation into a mould or a layer of the mixture may be applied to the mould where heating is required.
