Abstract

1393246 Aqueous sodium silicate adhesives FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd 18 May 1972 [2 June 1971] 18637/71 Headings C4X and C4A An adhesive or coating composition comprises 20-90% by wt. aqueous sodium silicate having a SiO 2 : Na 2 O ratio greater than 3 : 1, 10-80% of a powdered metal selected from Fe, Cu, Al and Al alloys, and refractory fibrous material in an amount up to 15%. A preferred composition comprises 20-65% aqueous sodium silicate, 10-60% metal powder, up to 15% refractory fibre, 0-20% clay, 0-20% refractory particles and 0-4% surface-active agent. The fibrous refractory may be alumina, asbestos, calcium or aluminium silicate fibre, quartz or glass fibre, e.g. in the commercial forms mineral wool, slag wool, or rock wool, and the particulate refractory may be zircon, silica, alumina, magnesia, zirconia, titania, calcium silicate, an aluminosilicate, grog, calcined clay or chromite flour. The composition may be of consistency varying from liquid to thick paste, and may be used for attaching sheets, slabs or shapes of thermally insulating material to metal articles. The metal surface may first be primed, e.g. with aqueous sodium silicate containing a surfactant or with vitreous enamel optionally containing a particulate refractory. In the example a primer consisting of sodium silicate, water and a surfactant was overcoated with an adhesive layer consisting of aqueous sodium silicate, Fe powder, amosite asbestos, ball clay, zircon and surfactant.
