Abstract
1455824 Roadstone aggregate STEETLEY (MFG) Ltd 28 Feb 1974 [1 Dec 1972] 55688/72 Headings C1J and C1H [Also in Division C3] A roadstone aggregate comprises particles of a hard wearing igneous metamorphic or sedimentary rock having bonded to the surface thereof a granular coating comprising refractory materials. The rock may be granite, basalt, gritstone, shale, or mineral. The refractory material may be magnesia based, alumina based, silica based or chrome ore. The magnesia based refractory may contain 30-80 wt. per cent MgO, less than 3 wt. per cent CaO, less than 5 wt. per cent SiO 2 , the balance being spinel-forming substances, e.g. Cr 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 and optionally hydration resistant additives, e.g. boron oxide. Alumina based refractories may be sillimanite, kyanite, andolusite, mullite or bauxite. Bonding aids (e.g. sodium phosphate, potassium phosphate, sodium silicate, sodium fluoride, sodium fluorosilicate, caustic soda, caustic potash, sodium sulphate and potassium sulphate) may be used. The roadstone aggregate may be prepared by caking the rock substrate and the refractory material, e.g. in a brick kiln, shaft kiln or rotary kiln. The aggregate may be in admixture with a binder, e.g. tar, hot-rolled asphalt, bitumen, cement, concrete, or a resin-bitumen mixture.
