Abstract

1,171,963. Foundry-moulding sand composition. BRITISH NON-FERROUS METALS RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 19 June, 1968 [19 June, 1967], No. 28281/67. Addition to 1,087,767. Heading C3N. A foundry-moulding sand composition comprises: (a) a particulate refractory material; (b) an aqueous solution of sodium silicate; (c) 0À25-5% wt., based on (a) of an organic material; (d) ferrous sulphate; and (e) a metal fluoride. (a) May be e.g. SiO 2 , ZrSiO 4 , chrome or olivine sand, or sillimanite; (b) preferably has SiO 2 /Na 2 O from 2-3.3, with viscosity 7-120‹ Twaddle; (c) may be dextrin, starch, or a sugar, e.g. sucrose; (d) may be FeSO 4 .7H 2 0; (e) may be CaF 2 . Also present may be > 50% wt. based on (c) of fine CaCO 3 . Based on wt. of (d), there may be 3-5% (b). The compositions may be set by CO 2 and/or heat, e.g. 160- 250‹ C. At the temperatures encountered during casting, # 1300‹ C., (d) decomposes to give Fe 2 O 3 , which oxidizes (c), and to give SO 3 and H 2 SO 4 which react with (e) to give HF which attacks the silicate bonds between the refractory particles. Other oxidizing agents may be present. The (c), (d), and (e) may be premixed, and then mixed with (a), followed by addition of (b). The pre-mix may contain, in wt. per cent, (c) 65-80; (d) 10-20; (e) 10-20. These ingredients may all pass 200 mesh B.S.I. sieve, 0.25% wt., based on (a), of this premix may be used.
