Abstract

A heat-producing agent comprises a mixture of aluminium and an amount of oxidizing agent below the amount needed to oxidize the aluminium completely and 1.5 per cent by weight of a fluoride to facilitate the burning of the aluminium and the lowering of the temperature at which the reaction starts. The fluoride may be sodium fluoride or sodium or potassium cryolite or a mixture of these. The mixture may be incorporated in a shaped body such as that described in Specification 606,119, [Group V], and may be bonded with gum and contain bentonite and granulated grog. The oxidizing agent may be sodium nitrate, manganese dioxide or iron oxides or a mixture of these. The aluminium may be in the form of sawings and preferably should pass through a 20-mesh sieve. Examples are given of mixtures suitable for use with steel, copper and aluminium castings.
