Abstract
A reaction mixture, suitable for use in producing high-strength cast iron, comprises silicon, strontium in the form of a strontium compound, and a nitrate radicle, the components of mixture being present in such proportions as to be capable of reacting exothermically upon contact with molten cast iron to decompose the nitrate radicle, oxidise a portion only of the silicon and melt and incorporate in the molten cast-iron the remainder of the silicon. The mixture may contain silicon, a strontium compound and one or more nitrates of calcium, strontium, barium and magnesium. Mixtures containing silicon and strontium nitrate or ferrosilicon and strontium nitrate or ferrosilicon, sodium nitrate and strontium nitrate are referred to. In the latter case the components may be intimately associated with and bonded together by the sodium nitrate. Examples are given of the addition of silicon to cast irons containing normal proportions of carbon and manganese.
