Abstract

Magnesium is added to cast iron to produce nodular graphite as incompletely nitrided magnesium. The magnesium nitride may contain 3 to 20 per cent. of free magnesium. After the addition of the magnesium compound the melt may be innoculated with ferro-silicon, and may contain a residual amount of magnesium between 0.01 and 0.04 per cent.
