Abstract
In a method of reducing the carbon content of steel in which molten steel is maintained under a slag of calcium oxide and a high iron oxide content (i.e. 35 per cent or more, by weight), an exothermic reaction mixture, capable of yielding on ignition an alkali metal oxide which reacts with one or more components of the slag to promote reaction between the carbon in the steel and the iron oxide in the slag and in the steel, is added. The exothermic reaction mixture may comprise an oxidizing material and a non-carbonaceous reducing material and may be sodium nitrate and ferro-silicon in the form of small agglomerates, the constituents being bonded together with water, moulded and then dried. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 545,481.
