1282096 Moulding refractory bodies FOSECO TRADING AG 5 Aug 1969 [16 Aug 1968] 39406/68 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions B3 C3 and D2] A method for the production of a flexible, refractory, heat-insulating material comprises forming, in a liquid medium consisting to an extent of at least 80% by wt. of one or more of methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, a ketone or a chlorinated hydrocarbon, a slurry of fibrous refractory material and a binder, the binder being soluble in the medium, and removing sufficient medium to form a damp flexible shape of deposited fibres. This flexible shape may be formed in a suitable mould, which is preferably preheated, and allowed to harden, giving a rigid product. The fibrous refractory material may be calcium silicate, aluminium silicate or aluminosilicate fibres (which may be in the form of slag wool, rock wool or mineral wool). Suitable binders are epoxy resins, novolak resins, resol resins, acrylic polymers, styrene polymers, butadiene polymers, urea-formaldehyde resins, melamine resins, polyphenylene oxide resins, alkyd resins, polycarbonate resins, phenoxy polymers, polysulphone resins, polyesters, polyalkylenes (e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene), vinyl polymers, silicone resins and polymethanes or mixtures and copolymers of these. The slurry may also contain a particulate refractory filler e.g. crushed coke, silica, grog, expanded perlite or vermiculite, chromite flow, zirconia, magnesia, alumina or ball mill dust.
