321,609. Metallges. Akt.-Ges., Goldschmidt, V. M., and Stenvik, K. Jan. 24,1929. Mould and core materials.-Artificial or natural magnesium orthosilicate is used for dressing or making moulds. Moulds may be made in the ordinary way from olivine sand or powdered olivine, with or without soapstone, magnesite, magnesium hydroxide or chloride, clay, iron compounds, syrup, sulphite waste, or other binder or they may be built up from blocks of natural olivine or made from granular olivine by cementing with binders or with materials forming synthetic magnesium orthosilicate or by moulding the mixture in the ordinary way and then baking at a temperature below the melting point of magnesium orthosilicate. Rock containing 80 to 90 per cent of the magnesium salt and 6 to 20 per cent of iron salt is suitable and may be first roasted. The moulds are useful for casting manganese steel, iron, or other metal having a high melting point or for aluminium or other metal which reacts chemically with the common mould materials.
