Abstract

1,266,606. Treating sand. J. S. SCHUMACHER. 13 March, 1969 [19 March, 1968], No. 13369/69. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions C3 and F4] Foundry sand is prepared by breaking up hot used moulds after casting and cooling the hot sand by mixing it with a sufficiently larger quantity of cooled or fresh sand to ensure that the resultant mixture has a temperature below 120‹ F. Malleable iron castings were cast in sand moulds containing a 4 to 1 sand/metal ratio. The moulds were broken at a shakeout station, the used sand then had a temperature of over 350‹ F. 16 times the weight of the metal cast of fresh sand was added to the hot sand and the mixture conveyed 200 feet to a hopper where the mixture temperature had fallen to 100‹ F. After mulling, the mixture temperature was 90‹ F.
