Abstract

1437372 Casting processes W H MOORE 30 April 1973 [1 Nov 1972] 20345/73 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] Low sulphur iron having a chill value of not more than <SP>8</SP>/ 32 inch is initially treated with sufficient rare earth metal and alkaline earth metal to increase the chill value by 50 to 150% and is then poured into a mould incorporating a reservoir and skimmer gate, the reservoir containing “-1“% (based on the wt. of iron) of a magnesium alloy such that the iron has a residual magnesium content of at least 0À1%. The iron may contain (by wt.) 3À3-4% C, 1-3% Si, 0À2-1% Mn, 0À02-0À1% P, 0À005-0À06% S, with possibly also Ni, Cu and/or Mo, the low sulphur content being obtained by treatment with calcium carbide while agitating the bath by gas from a porous plug; the preferred addition agent for the first step of the spheroidizing process is a mixture of cerium fluoride with calcium silicide or carbide. The magnesium additive may be in the form of magnesium ferrosilicon or magnesium-nickel alloy and may initially occupy between 25 and 50% of the volume of the reservoir.
