Abstract
1278265 Moulds; casting processes MATERIALS & METHODS Ltd 15 July 1969 [17 July 1968] 33970/68 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] Molten grey iron is run into a mould cavity through a conventional pouring system which additionally includes one or more intermediate chambers containing sufficient nodularizing agent to produce a casting of S.G. iron. The additive may be present as powder, lump, or extruded or bonded shapes, while the chamber containing it may be connected directly to a pouring bush, sprue, riser, whirlgate, runner or ingate. In the particular embodiment illustrated, iron introduced through downsprue 2 passes through intermediate chamber 3 containing the additive before entering the mould cavity 1 through riser 4. At the outlet of the intermediate chamber there is a dam 6 to ensure adequate residence time of the iron.
