An exothermic mixture used in a foundry mould hot top comprises by percentage, aluminium particles 15-50; sodium nitrate 5-10; iron oxide 0-5; core gum 1-5; cryolite, sodium fluoride or sodium silico fluoride 0.5-10 (preferably 1-5) sand 40-60.
