A process for making self-hardening moulds comprises mixing a granular refractory material, aqueous sodium silicate and a powder comprising silicon or an alloy and/or compound containing silicon and only one other element, other than silica sand, and shaping the mixture to form a mould. The granular refractory may be silica sand, and the compound containing silica may be ferrosilicon or calcium silicide. Sodium hydroxide may be added to the sodium silicate and additives such as cereal flours, dextrins, sawdust, woodflour, carbonaceous materials and/or pitch may also be included.
